Organic Gardening- Rascally Rabbits Invade

Photo- courtesy of freerangestock.com
I am sure you all have seen the shows... cartoons and others, where the rabbits come in, and just wipe out the veggies in the mean ol' Farmers garden. He tries everything to fix the problem, but they just keeping robbing him blind. We all laugh and stuff, but now I see why that farmer was so irritated!!!

Our lil urban garden, had a few visitors from this furry group, and they ate 3 of our 8 romaine lettuce plants down to the dirt in one big feast!!! Grrrrrr

Well, since I am trying to be "earth friendly", and have an organic garden without any type of chemicals or harming any native creatures.... including those lil furry robber rabbits, we had to get creative on how to stop them. Not to mention, I am trying to garden on a very tight budget!!!! So buying those cute little white wire fences, or buying pretty much anything was out of the question.

We have a pet that we thought might be able to help us out with this issue. This pet was my husband's idea by the way, I'm not a big fan. It is a reptile predator of those lil furry mammals that were quickly wiping out my dreams of organic salads fresh from our garden. That's right our pet is a snake! A Florida Kingsnake named Angel to be exact!!!!

 Angel's skin protecting our garden from rabbits.
Before anyone even thinks it... No, I would not dare feed one of these city rabbits trying to survive to our Angel! We used her snakeskin to scare them away!!!

Decided to just lay one of her skins out by the lettuce, and see what happened. You know what..... IT WORKED!!!! Those rascally rabbits haven't taken one more bite out of my garden!!! We saw them in the yard, and watched out the window as they headed back up to munch away. As soon as the bunny came within a foot of the skin, it froze. Then after just a few seconds...they both hopped away very quickly!!!

The rabbits haven't been back, our veggies our safe, and we saved our budget using something we had on hand!  Wooo HOOO!!!

~Have any of you had an issue with rabbits, birds or other animals, and had to get creative to save your plants in an earth friendly way?  Would love to hear about them or any comments you have about our rabbit blocking idea! {I just love comments!!!}

~Come back next Saturday, and check out the latest post in our organic gardening adventure...... =)

    1. Me too! Angel sheds about once every 3-4 weeks so I am just planning on putting the next one out there too. Our neighbors are going to think we have a snake infestation before long!!! LOL

  3. You should see all the crazy things I get in my organic garden. Rabbits haven't come out yet, but when they do it won't be pleasant. I also have a very bratty cat that loves eating tomatoes - yes very weird indeed.

    1. LOL! My parents had a dog that would eat pretty much any veggie and fruits too! Some animals crave them. Thank goodness the area strays and neighbors cats that they let outdoors do not like tomatoes too! ;)

  6. Neighbor of mine had a garden. Rabbits feasted for days. Neighbor of mine put up a mesh fence around this garden. Rabbits chewed through it and feasted some more. Neighbor of mine put up a metal fencing around the garden. Rabbits dug under it and feasted even more. Neighbor gave up on the garden. Was quite entertaining :)

  14. We have rabbits in our yard too but they are our pets =) we have 12 that live in a large barn like house that we built them. They are very affectionate and their droppings are like gold for the veggies in the garden! I do have a small problem with squirrels eating my garden and the birds love to wreck plants by eating the blossoms. I have rubber snakes in the garden and a fake hawk. It seems to help a bit but I would really just like to put a dome over the whole thing haha.
