Back Drops For School Pictures and More ~ DropPlace Review

Photographers have been using back drops for years to give their pictures a professional and polished flair. Now bloggers with all different focuses from food to family are beginning to use them more frequently, but what about homeschooling parents and groups? They could really benefit from being able to take their own pictures right at home for the school year too. I recently found a place that not only has a wide variety to choose from, but they are priced so that a family can easily afford them too!

I received this product for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own. see disclosure.

DropPlace offers vinyl back drops and floors. They have 24 different categories of drops including vintage, windows, strips, scenic, weddings, kids, sports and many more. They even offer a line of custom back drops that you can personalize. These back drops and floors come in three sizes: 3'x4', 5'x6', and 6'x8' with a 1/2 inch white border around the edges. You are able to order custom sizing as well with some restrictions, but for my home, their standard sizes are more than adequate.
What caught my eye initially, as I was thinking how to take our own school pictures this year, was the chalkboard and kid themed back drops from DropPlace. That lead me to start looking through their wide selection, and a few of my favorites are pictured above.
I ended up choosing the Do Your Own Thing wood floor, but let me tell you it was a hard decision! Thought this back drop could pull double duty as a school year picture back drop and for my blogging pictures with it's realistic white aged wood that also features a hints of color.
As I have experimented with hanging and laying the 3'x4' backdrop around to take pictures, I noticed that it is incredibly durable, and can easily wipe clean. It has a wrinkle free matte finish that I love. This size has been perfect for shots with our 16 month old son, blogging pictures of review items, and head shots. I am looking forward to using this backdrop in some of upcoming recipes posts too. I obviously need lots of practice with my photography skills, but am impressed by how the DropPlace back drop gave my simple pictures a cleaner, more polished look this week.

Note- the white at the bottom was
due to the sun. The back drop color/print
was constant from top to bottom.
Now what I consider the tricky part when it comes to using a back drop at home and not being what would be considered a professional photographer by any means, is how to hang the drop when taking your pictures. Without professional stands or equipment you need to get creative for head shots. I came up with an idea that has worked for us. We used clothes pins and our outdoor clothes line. This actually works out pretty great even though the lighting wasn't the best the day I came up the idea.

I definitely have plans to redo this photo shoot with my kids dressed for the occasion to take our actual 2015-16 school year pictures this fall, but I loved how easy it was to hang the back drop as well as how it looked in the photos. A second idea that I came across on the DropPlace website in their FAQ's section was to use push pins in the 1/2 inch white border to hang the drop. We didn't try this one yet, but I am keeping that idea in mind.
With so many beautiful choices for back drops and floors at DropPlace, and their affordable prices, I feel like these are a great buy. I am amazed at how realistic the back drop looks in my photos, and have my eye on a few more to pick up down the road. Obviously I have a lot to learn about utilizing the backdrops to better showcase my family and other items, but I have had so much fun trying to better my skills! The DropPlace back drops and floors can easily fit in a homeschooler's or even the homeschool co-op/group's budget for picture day this school year with prices starting at just $25.
