The Biggest Story: How The Snake Crusher Brings Us Back To The Garden Review

Most all of us know the story of the Garden of Eden from the Bible, and have heard about the great flood, plagues of Egypt, and the miracle birth of Jesus. Still trying to understand, especially for children, the overall message of these stories, and God's plan is lost in the details. I received a book geared towards children, The Biggest Story: How The Snake Crusher Brings Us Back To The Garden, that shows how everything is linked and really does explain the biggest story.

Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.
The Biggest Story written by Kevin DeYoung- a best-selling author, senior pastor, and father of six -takes the stories of the Bible, and turns them into a fun journey connecting the dots from the garden of Eden all the way through the death of Christ then to the new heaven and new earth. Below is a few sentences pulled from the first chapter.

"Once upon a time there lived a man and a woman. They were the happiest people on the planet. True, they were the only people on the planet, but they were still terrifically happy. Unfortunately, things didn't stay happy and wonderful for long..."

In Chapter 6, when discussing how God's people wanted a King even though he warned them how kings could be bad, Kevin DeYoung writes, "be careful what you ask for- you just might get it". With 10 chapters written in this very down to earth style, The Biggest Story retells most of the biblical timeline in a fresh way that is very easy to follow.

My children and I have read through The Biggest Story one chapter at a time in the mornings. Kevin DeYoung doesn't just retell Bible stories he explains and condenses them. I really liked how he took the complex message of the Bible, and without "dumbing" it down brought it to your child's level. Actually he helped me see how everything connected better than I had before too.

There are two main themes throughout this 132 page, hardback book. One- Jesus is not only the Savior, but the fulfillment of multiple prophecies. He is the Snake Crusher. Two- The Biggest Story shows how after losing the Garden home in the beginning, God's people were constantly fighting, losing, searching, and longing for a home throughout the Bible. He then shows that Jesus came to finally be the One to lead them and us to our promised home.

I can't review this book without raving about the vivid and powerful illustrations by the award winning artist, Don Clark. The bright colors and geometric designs with the influence of nature just draw you in to the story. While the message of the Bible is not new, the look created by Don Clark and casual writing style of Kevin DeYoung, make it feel modern.
