Recently I was contacted about reviewing the new book from the We Do Listen Foundation Howard B. Wigglebottom  Learns About Courage. {To learn more about the We Do Listen Non Profit Foundation check out my first Howard B. Wigglebottom children's book review} This book, which is geared towards children ages 4-8, could not have arrived at a more perfect time. My son has a bit of fear when it comes to the dark, and staying in his room alone. We have been trying everything. He has a night light, a lava lamp, a toy that lights up, and we leave the hallway light on too. Learns About Courage is exactly what he needed!

In this book, Howard B. Wigglebottom, the bunny, is having issues with different circumstances that make him feel afraid. Loud noises, the dark, what could be under his bed, spiders, and the 1st day of school among a few other things have him nervous and stressed out. Before long he is frozen by fear, and too afraid to even leave his bedroom to play outside.

With the help of a new friend Howard learns how to be courageous & face his fears. He also learns that others even super heroes have those feelings too, and it's ok to be afraid. (my son loved the illustrations!)

Howard also learns that to be courageous he must first have been scared, and he needs to have the courage to be brave even when he feels afraid. This book really lays it out there in a way that younger kids can relate to.

Courage is such a hard concept to teach younger children, in my opinion. After receiving the book we have read over it quite a few times.  Although parts of the book, like the section where fear of going to school is mentioned, do not apply to our family since we homeschool, the rest of the book definitely hit home.  I could tell my son was just soaking it all in.

The authors really accomplished bringing this difficult subject to a child's level. During our second reading of this adorable story my son and I went over the helpful section in the back of the book with lessons & reflection ideas. We were able to have a wonderful conversation discussing why he feels the way he does.  I really think Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Courage has given me better ways to discuss being brave and having courage with him. We Love this story!!!

  8. That does sound like a great book! And relating it to kids' level with things they are afraid of I'm sure helps. It is a good idea to inculcate the concepts of courage at a young age, to value qualities that you can't obtain like something you can buy, etc.
