The League and the Lantern Review

My daughter is finishing up her seventh grade year, and boy has it just flown by. Now that the school year is winding down, she is doing more reading for enjoyment. Recently she has been drawn to adventure fiction, and as always, I have been searching for a good read that not only will be educational but entertaining too. Now I am excited to share with you a wonderful book for middle-school age kids that is jammed packed with adventure and educational references too.

The League and the Lantern by Brian Wells is the first book in a new adventure series for middle-school readers. This first book introduces you to three unique and daring seventh graders: Jake, Lucy and TJ, who meet at a seventh-grade sleepover that is kicking off the new school year at a museum in Chicago. Things quickly take a dangerous turn when an organization invades and attempts to steal President Lincoln's gloves which as chance would have it Jake daringly swipes first. All this action leads to the three kids unraveling a mystery dating back to the Civil War, and an incredible secret about Jake's family too. While they are different races and have incredibly different backgrounds, the three new friends ban together to keep each other safe, and that begins their whirlwind adventure!

This fast paced book has many references to President Lincoln, the Civil War, and much more. One of my favorite parts is hidden throughout the story are 140 key vocabulary words, and various historical sites are parting of the setting.Your kids will not only be learning historical lessons while reading for enjoyment, but quite a few unexpected ones about courage, compassion, mercy and family along with the lead characters. Parents and kids can visit The League and the Lantern to access tons of bonus material too. The bonus section includes a vocabulary guide, fact vs. fiction information from the story(spoilers), Lincoln's Speeches and much more.

In my opinion, Brian Wells has done a wonderful job with his debut title and has given us a story that keeps learning and reading fun! My daughter and I both enjoyed reading The League and the Lantern. I cannot wait to read the second book myself especially after reading the epilogue at the end which let's you know that the adventure for Jake and his friends is just beginning.
