Give Game Night a Flip With Squashed ~ Holiday Gift Guide

We love to play games in our home, and when I come across a game that sounds like fun for our whole family, we have to try it. Well, thanks to PlaSmart, I was sent the unique board game to review, Squashed. We have never played a game like this one before, and we are having a blast! I am beyond excited to share with all of you this wonderful Gift Idea For The Kids!
Squashed is a 3D board game, and the object of the game is to be the last pawn standing. {Easier said than done, but more on that below.} It has been the recipient of 2 awards in 2014 both the 2014 Family Fun Top 15 and 2014 Game of the Year in the Kid's Games Category from Creative Child Magazine.
This unconventional board game includes the following items-
  • King Piece
  • Squash Pad
  • a die
  • A Squashed Cube
  • 16 pawns with 4 in each color {Orange, Green , Red, and Purple}
Game play is not difficult to master at all, but there is some strategy involved. It is recommended for ages 6 and up. You may have 2-4 players, but personally I see no reason why you couldn't divide into teams if you have more people wanting to join in the action.

To begin a game you simply place the Squashed cube on the Squash pad or another surface where you are easily able to see the 4 sides showing colored spaces. Put the King Piece on the very top in the center of the cube. Next the players choose their color pawn from the 4 colors. If you have only two players they can use two color pawns. Then just simply put your pawns in the their color locations on the four sides. Since the pattern is already set up for you, everyone will have an equal chance of winning.

Seeing who goes first can be your choice, by the roll of the die, or the way you are seated. Once you have decided, just roll that die, and let the fun begin! You can move your pawn or pawns in a variety of ways. They can move horizontal or vertical in direction. You can even move then both ways if needed. Plus you may split up the move between multiple pawns, and move them to a different adjoining faces of the cube. The only No-No is moving your pawn diagonally.

To Squash those opponents pawns out of game play, you just pass over their occupied space, but you don't have to end your turn there... you keep going. This allows you to be able to possibly take out more than one pawn at a time. You can also Squash opponents by landing on any of the King Piece spaces, and then Flipping the cube to any one of the four sides you choose. (This is where we have found that strategy comes into play big time!) For Flipping you are only allowed one per turn, and it MUST be done at the end of your turn when all of your other moves dictated by your roll on the die have been used. *Also if you land on a King Piece space you MUST flip the cube.

After the Flip, you just move the King Piece back to the new top of cube in the center location. If by chance there happens to be another players piece in one of the four King Piece spaces, they have to wait until it is their turn and move to grab a different or reclaim the King Piece space.

With so many different ways to move your pawns, and everyone starting out on an even playing field, this 3D board game, Squashed, is both a challenging and exciting game. You really need to plan your moves, and keep an eye on your opponents pawns. The last player standing wins, and you are on the edge of your seat the entire game hoping it's you! We have enjoyed playing Squashed as a family, and I am thrilled to learn a new board game unlike any I have ever played before with our kids. Squashed has definitely Flipped our family game night into an exciting time! What can I say, we are loving Squashing those pawns!
