Little Pim Spanish DVD Review

Hola! Is learning a foreign language like Spanish something you wish for your kids? It is never too early to get them started. When I was given the opportunity to review the Little Pim Playtime DVD in Spanish I couldn't wait to get my 5 year old son started.

Let me first introduce you to Little Pim. Little Pim is an animated Panda that helps "teach" your kiddos your language of choice. There are 12 language options including Spanish, which is what I chose for my review. This program was created by Julia Pimsleur Levine, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and mother. She herself learned to speak French fluently by the age of 6. As a mother she was looking for a DVD that had total immersion, and was age appropriate for her young son. Not finding a program she was completely happy with she brought us all Little Pim. Thank you, Julia!!!!

The Playtime DVD I was sent to review is 35 minutes long, and has short 5 minute episodes. This really held my very busy son's attention. Sometimes he was playing with his toys while watching, and I didn't make a big production out of our viewing time by saying,"Sit still and watch this". Thinking that really helped it feel like a fun thing to do rather than a school related activity. By the way, notice I said "our viewing". One of the helpful hints from the insert inside the DVD & on the Little Pim website suggests watching with your child, and I am so happy I followed that direction...... I'm learning Spanish with him. Pretty cool.

After the DVD kicks on you are given choices on how you would like to view. The first time we popped it in I chose to see the English subtitles, so I would understand what was going on. Actually ended up finding the English words across the bottom distracting, so for all of the other times we have watched it, I left them off. The pictures and actions the different children and cartoon characters are participating in make it easy to deduct what is happening & what each word is translated to English.

With Playtime as a theme they are really able to throw in quite a variety of activities like dressing up, playing at the park, tea parties, blowing bubbles, dressing up pets, colors, shapes, and playing with cars just to name a few. All the children in this DVD are doing and experiencing a playtime just like most younger children would. With the fast pace and repetition, my son is really absorbing this new vocabulary quickly. Speaking of the vocabulary, each Little Pim DVD includes over 60 different words and phrases!

We watched the Playtime Little Pim DVD several times over the last few weeks, and I have been very impressed with how quickly & easily both of my kids are picking up Spanish. Even though the program is geared towards ages 0-6, both my 10 year old daughter & I watched it too. It has been a wonderful experience to all begin learning Spanish together.
Besides DVDs Little Pim also offers flashcards, CD's, a Little Pim Plush toy, Digital Apps for mobile devices & more. Find out more about Little Pim by checking out their website. You can also find more helpful hints as well as color pages, and a game in Little Pim's For Parents section.  Now as Little Pim would say, "Una vez más?" (One more time?) Don't mind if we do!

Adiós! Hasta Pronto! = Goodbye, See You Soon! :)

  1. I would love my daughter to learn Spanish and this would be a great way for her to do it. She learns very well by watching tv. She learned to count and her ABCs from watching Sesame Street. This is definitely something I am going to look into. Thanks!
